Returning to themes already explored in Sisters, or the Balance of Happiness, Margarethe von Trotta based this provocative drama on the true-life experiences of Christiane and Gudrun Ensslin. While this is a highly politicised film, there is also a pronounced personal emphasis, with magazine editor Jutta Lampe being shaken from her bourgeois lethargy by the state's insistence that the Stammheim prison death of her hunger-striking terrorist sister (Barbara Sukowa) was suicide. Highlighting the need for continuity and courage in the protest against social injustice, von Trotta also examines what causes individuals from identical backgrounds to depart in such radically different directions.
