Set during the Balkan war of the 1990's, As If I Am Not There is based on true events and tells the story of Samira (Natasha Petrovic), a young woman from Sarajevo whose life is shattered the day a young soldier walks into her apartment and tells her to pack her things. Rounded up with the other women from the village and imprisoned in a warehouse in a remote region of Bosnia, she quickly learns the rules of camp life. However, the day she is picked out to 'entertain' the soldiers, the real nightmare begins. In a final act of courage or madness, Samira decides to make one last stand: to dare to be herself. And this simple act saves her life.
In Belfast, a city left torn by war, a series of murders awaken dormant memories. Colm Meaney and Malcolm Sinclair star in a film about dangerous men facing a world in which they are no longer necessary. But old habits die hard. And while most go quietly into the night, one man must find the few who won't comply. It is hard to bring peace and harder still to accept it. A new generation is rising, ignorant of the old ways, but a few old friends are stubbornly refusing to die gracefully. And in Belfast, before you stumble out into the dawn, someone always has to buy the last round.
Michael Lynch (Kevin Spacey) is a suave, sarcastic and sexy man: an ordinary decent criminal who robs from the rich but lives with the poor. He loves his wife, Christine (Linda Fiorentino) and her sister Lisa (Helen Baxendale), his children, his gang and, above all, his unique way of life. He dreams up robberies with hallmark panache which rarely fail to endear him to the public. He challenges authority at every turn, culminating in the ultimate art theft from Dublin's most prestigious gallery, outwitting and confounding the police, Interpol and the rest of the criminal fraternity. Michael is driven by two fundamental beliefs: be loyal to your own and to hell with everyone else. He succeeds so well that what starts as a laugh evolves into something far more dangerous. He begins to enjoy the sting more that the cash, and the notoriety most of all. As his ego drives him on, the police, in particular Noel Quigley (Stephen Dillane), become determined to break him.
On the fringes of Dublin two children, Kylie and Dylan, live in a suburban housing estate devoid of life, colour and the prospect of escape. Kylie lives with five other siblings and her overworked mother. Next door, Dylan lives in the shadow of an alcoholic father and the memory of an elder brother who ran away from home two years earlier. After a violent altercation with his father, Dylan runs away from home and Kylie decides to go with him. Together they make their way to the magical night time lights of inner city Dublin, to search for Dylan's brother, and in the hope of starting a new life.
John (Jack Reynor) lives with his mother, Jean (Toni Collette), in a Dublin social housing suburb and ekes out a meager living as a taxi driver. Spending his days hanging out with his best friend, Shane (Will Poulter) and long nights driving, he returns home one morning to find his mother unconscious from an overdose. It is not the first time. Embarrassed and engulfed by a sense of helplessness, Jean violently rejects John's attempts to help. But when Jean is offered a final opportunity to recover by her counselor Jim (Michael Smiley), and with no savings or insurance, John is forced to offer his services to a criminal gang to help pay for his mother's costly rehabilitation program. John is subsequently faced with a life-changing task that may alter him and his family's lives forever.
