Synopsis:
Documentary series examining the history of the castles of Britain and Ireland.

Edinburgh Castle
An impressive fortress overlooking the city of Edinburgh, this castle served as both army barracks and prison, housing some of history's more infamous characters including the Duke of Argyle. The castle has a close association with Scotland's frequently turbulent history and is seen as one of the most tangible embodiments of that history. In its only furnished room, Mary Queen of Scots bore a son who was probably a child from her Italian secretary and lover, who was killed in her presence. The castle stands at the end of the Royal Mile, a road that links it to the Royal Palace: Holyrood House, a royal residence and inauguration site to numerous Scottish monarchs.
Highland Castles
The island of Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebrides, a group of islands on the west coast of Scotland with a breathtaking set of hills and valleys covered by moors and grass. The island is perpetually enveloped in a mist and it is from this that the island owes its name, which comes from the Norwegian word Ski, meaning 'mist'. This mist has been responsible for many shipwrecks along the island's jagged coasts, preventing enemy attacks on this territory. As a result, a system of closed communities could thrive in this area. These communities developed into clans over time and the castles of these clans served as their source of refuge and support.
