Mr. Nath (Shashi Kapoor) is a wealthy man who lives in a small town in India with his son, Pran, and paternal nephew, Gautam (Rajendra Nath). The two young men would like to go on vacation to Bombay, and he permits them to do so. The two delightedly travel there, rent two rooms in a small apartment building, befriend their neighbors, and fall in love with two lovely young women, Vijaya (Vijaya Choudhury) and Seema (Naseem Banu). Both propose to them for marriage, but are met with opposition from Seema's dad and Vijaya's maternal uncle. The four then register for a marriage in secret, get married and subsequently Seema and Vijaya move in to their apartments.
Things do not go quite well for two women claiming to be the wives of Pran (with a small child) and Gautam show up, as a result of which both Seema and Vijaya leave them, returning back to their respective parent and uncle's homes, leaving the hapless duo to ponder what went wrong, and when and how they got married to these women. To complicate matters further, the two also have to content with their now alienated neighbors and an angry and suspicious Mr. Nath - who wants a complete and up to date details of all money they have squandered away so far.
