Alice Chenery's search for sanity, sex and a soul-mate seems to have taken a step forward now she has a steady boyfriend. Script writer Douglas McVitie might not exactly set her pulse racing - actually she suspects it might even slow down a little - but he's nice, makes her feel comfortable and he loves her. As Alice moves to London and finds new friends in emerging star, actress Fae Madison and TV producer Lloyd Drewitt it seems like life is looking up. But Alice being Alice, the doubts soon set in - do you really know in your heart of hearts what is meant to be? Though Alice is still working at the department store, her new friends drag her into the world of showbiz. There, her encounters with heartthrob actor Jake Randall, veteran comedian Gordon Bexter, madcap Marty Cady and a German necrophiliac only serve to increase her self-doubt. Could Douglas really be "the one"? Should she adopt the more off-beat attitude to romance shared by her perfume counter colleagues Millie and Cleo?
