- Synopsis:
- Set in New Mexico following the Civil War, Captain Richard Lance (Gregory Peck) volunteers to lead a mission against Apaches who have burned an army fort to the ground. When the dying Colonel learns of this, he orders Captain Lance to send someone else, because Lance is the only one he trusts to run the installation. Lance is forced to send a popular young Lieutenant, who ends up being tortured and killed by Apache forces. Though they need his expertise, the men turn against Lance as their lives hang in the balance.
