Mongolia, a wild and desolate country separating Russia and China in the heart of Central Asia is steeped in mystery. The home of the most famous conqueror, Genghis Khan, has been closed to the western world until recently.
Julia Roberts travels to this land to discover more about how the nomads live off the land and why the horse has been such an important player in their lives. Living with a local nomadic family she marvels at their equestrian skills.
An avid rider herself, she goes in search of the birthplace of the Asiatic wild horse of Takhi. These horses lived on the arid plains for thousands of years, but by the middle of the last century the Takhi had been hunted to extinction.
However thanks to a ground breaking scheme, the Mongolians are re-introducing this horse back into its natural habitat. Like the Mongolian people rediscovering their heritage, the Takhis have a challenge ahead of them - to flourish once again... 'In The Wild'.
