Rent Management (2008)

When straight talking business woman Sue Claussen checks in for a single night at the roadside motel owned by Mike’s family in Arizona, what starts with a bottle of dreadful champagne "compliments of the management" evolves into a bumpy ride toward true love. Eventually. You see, Mike’s an aimless dreamer and best his whole life all on a trip to visit Sue across the continent in Maryland-only to find that she has no place for his impulsive charms in her carefully ordered, buttoned down life. Obsessed with making a difference in the world, Sue has gone back to her yoghurt mogul ex-boyfriend Jango. But Mike’s not convinced. Having found the love of his life, Mike pits everything he has against Sue’s safe, conservative existence. Only then might he persuade her that their place in the world just might be together.

Not a great storyline - one that's been used before. You also just know how it will end. But - I like Jennifer Aniston and would happily watch anything she is in. Not just cos she is beautiful but she is a good comedy actress and her facial expressions and comedy timing is excellent. She is well supported by Steve Zahn but it could have been anyone. A well acted, light hearted, fun movie with a moral twist.

Sack the management!

Management strikes you as one of these quirky independent romantic comedies, yet this one lacks novelty or distinguishing personality. The one interesting aspect is the casting of Aniston in a role devoid of Hollywood gloss. Far from being a challenge, she coasts through a lifeless character. The synopsis may indicate she's looking for happiness (and who isn't nowadays?), but she better find that personality first. The structure of the film is flipped; the attraction soon blossoms and is consummated, before the main characters really know one another, or we get to know them. A bizarre little film, but one I cannot really recommend.
