This film took me by surprise. It gives insights to culture and life in the early 1960s France and Senegal. In some ways, it's a sparse representation but also rich in critical comments, irony and even some humour. The harshness of the woman's character is contrasted by the sophisticated sensibilities of the main character. Wonderfully acted. There are many poignant moments in this film, plus some inexplicable surrealism. The artistry of Senegal is communicated very well.

There are many layers of interest in this film besides being at the core of African film making.

I looked forward to this, being interested in Uganda and the historical event that was being addressed. However, there was little history or political analysis apart from the throwaway stuff. I will go elsewhere for entertainment and/or to learn about politics and history relating to that relatively famous historical event.
