Shutter Island

dont forget your raygun

(Edit) 05/07/2011

like a lot of these recent US super twisting thrillers, they essentially confuse themselves so much in trying to be clever that the only option for the final reveal is disappointing absurdity. time spent watching what is quite a good looking film is sadly wasted as the struggle for a ending becomes creeping in until the whole production panics and delivers a final 40mins through gritted smiles telling us the equivalent that all the baddies were aliens and it was all just a dream anyway.

but if it was on tv youd watch it and probably stay up to see the ending.

The Tango Lesson

lesson learnt

(Edit) 17/11/2009

one of few directors so content with their own mediocrity. plays with atmosphere the same way a young teeny sets to reference all she has read up to that point. i did not chose tango, the tango chose me, says Pablo.

her casting is appalling, as are the accompanying musical sounds.

painful cliche after cliche both in script and direction, you can actually guess scenes and dialogue yet to come pretty accurately.

deciding to cast herself as the best example of a creative older woman searching for the passion in dance and the inevitable relationship with the teacher, her lack of acting skills together with a boring teenage diary style of melodrama in this self indulgent twaddle make it one to avoid. if it wasnt trying to be all ooh im just a natural artist and this is my story of how i changed my shoes, (chaussures in french you know), just for one mad mad day, it could be left without review. cos its so bad and pretends depth, i set a warning. i vote a miss.
