Synopsis:
The Imperial War Museum Collection features rare and fascinating original films preserved in the Museum's vaults. Many have never been released to the public before and are presented here, complete and uncut, for the very first time. These films are of great historical importance and are essential viewing for anyone interested in British military history. British fighting armour of the Second World War has rarely received the attention it deserves. This title attempts to redress the balance by collecting together five previously unreleased early wartime films featuring British tanks and armoured cars.
Together, they offer a treasure trove of rare footage as well as an insight into tank design, recognition and fighting tactics.

Tank Battle
Made by the Army Film Unit in 1942, this film features a large-scale exercise showing how a British armoured formation reconnoitres and locates the enemy; how the information is passed back to Higher Command and then how a plan is made and passed down to the men who have to fight the battle. It climaxes with a reconstructed tank battle, which includes the rare sight of British armour marked with German insignia.
Ten Tips for Tackling Tanks
This 1941 training film instructs British infantrymen on the best methods of attacking tanks by revealing their particular weaknesses, and highlights the use of such weapons as the 73 grenade, SP grenade, AW incendiary bomb, Hawkins grenade and anti-tank rifle.
Spot That Tank
This fascinating British 1942 AVF recognition film looks at the elements of tank and armoured car designs and provides useful hints and tips for distinguishing armour at different angles and in partly obscured positions.
Tank Patrol
Made in 1941, this stirring M.O.I. dramatisation tells the story of a Crusader tank crew trapped behind enemy lines in the Desert. With no intercom, a wounded crewman and little fuel, they must fight their way through an Italian column to freedom.
Birth of a Tank
This 1942 M.O.I. film follows the making of a typical Valentine tank from the construction of the smallest parts in converted garages through to larger assembly plants, test drives and despatch to the front line.
