'Gunbuster' is the saga of an Earth invasion by monstrous space creatures. Noriko Takaya is a young girl struggling to be part of the Earth Space Force like her legendary father. Surprisingly Noriko is chosen to join the force, but is challenged by a school rival who sets out to prove she was only picked because of her father's legend. Under the guidance on Coach Ota and 'Big Sister' Kazumi Amano, Noriko must face the challenge and master the skills of mecha combat in order to fight the alien threat.
I'm not a big anime expert, so I can only compare this to the western films and television I've seen, but it does compare favourably there.
This disc is actually 6 30 minute TV episodes strung into one. Because of this, there are some very unusual 'features' in the middle of the story explaining the fictional science of the gunbuster world. Skip them. Trust me.
That aside, the story is involved and engaging. The main charcter can be a bit pathetic at times, but at least she is a coherent well crafted individual. The time warping effects of their technology also produce really interesting scenes which are handled well and add a lot of depth to the story.
