An interesting story of court intrigue, Raaj Kumar presents the vicissitudes faced by the crown prince Raaj Kumar on his return from studies abroad. While the king prepares to celebrate the occasion, the commander Narpath Sing conspires with the prince's step-mother, who is his own sister, to kill the prince. Narpath Singh wants power, is alarmed that Raaj Kumar's coronation will mean his defeat. The assassination plot however leaks out to Raaj Kumar in time and he tries to counter it in his own way. Feigning to be a half wit, he comes clowning in the durbar. Narpath Singh even shoots him, but Raaj Kumar escapes. Narpath then kills a leading tribal chieftain and implicates Raaj Kumar. As required by custom, Sangita, has to avenge her fathers death. But Raaj Kumar meets her while in disguise of a villager and they fall in love. Raaj Kumar stages a triumphant entry into the durbar, but is arrested by the commander who has also imprisoned the king. Narpath then asks Sangita to avenge her father by killing Raaj Kumar. The imprisoned kings rises to the occasion. Truth triumphs. The lovers are united. Raaj Kumar declines the throne and proclaims that power belongs to the people and ushers in a republican order of government.
