Kenji Tanigaki has gathered an astonishing line-up of martial artists and handed them a script that mostly involves queueing up to get battered. Once Wang Wei's daughter is snatched, you can practically hear the henchmen taking numbered tickets.
The fights are engineering marvels. Bodies fly everywhere, and the camera swoops around without ever losing track of who's hitting whom. I could follow every kick, which is a small miracle given the headcount.
The trouble is that nobody stays down. People get flung, sliced and stamped on, then bounce back up as if they've stubbed a toe. I began to suspect the human skeleton was an optional extra.
Relentless martial-arts mayhem isn't usually my thing, and by the tenth dazzling fight my interest had slipped out for a quiet pint.
Terrific choreography. Shame I stopped caring who won.
