Synopsis:
Steam officially retired from daily use in England during August 1968, but thanks to the efforts of a dedicated band of enthusiasts who during the 1950's and 60's set out to record this fascinating part of everyday life, its still possible to enjoy the sights and sounds of British steam at work. This special programme features a selection of some of the most interesting lines from all around the old British Railways network including:
- The Waverley Route - passenger and freight trains on this scenic cross border route to Scotland that enjoyed it's heyday in the 1950's.
- The North East - some of the last coal trains around the Sunderland area.
- The East Coast Mainline in the late 1960's featuring Kings Cross and Knebworth.
- Worcester to Paddington - join the crew of a Castle as they work an express passenger train to London.
- The South East - atmospheric action in the late 1950's at Redhill.
- Bournemouth - spend time at this popular station in the late 1960's.
- The Somerset and Dorset - a chance to re-visit the most famous closed line of them all!
- The North West - splendid main line action through the beautiful Westmoreland countryside, including banking over Shap.
