Synopsis:
Shonti (Waheeda Rehman) and Raj (Sanjeev Kumar) were both from a middle-class family. Shanti was an ordinary clerk in an office, and Raj an engineer in a huge construction company. They were deeply in love. But when Raj finds out that his mother has received a proposal for Raj's marriage, for the hand of the boss's daughter, and that he would become a partner in the company after the marriage - his values dropped, his love for Shanti is forgotten. He does not accept Shanti even after he comes to know that she is to be the mother of his child. Shanti leaves town to give birth to a baby boy, Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan).
Before she could see Vijay achieve something in life, she departs from this world taking a promise from Vijay - that he would be a good human being. Vijoy leaves his home town and heads towards the city for a confrontation with his father, who is now a business magnate, R. K. Gupta. Gupta's happy world consists of his wife, son Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor) and his daughter Kusum (Poonam Dhillon). Vijay enters into their lives with revange in his heart and wanting justice for the ill treatment of his mother, but ends up falling in love with Geeta (Rakhee), his father R. K. Gupta's assistant. Gupta does not know about his bond with Vijay, and there is turmoil and cold war between the two. One day Vijay reveals to him who he is, and Gupta's past and the choices he has made come back to haunt him. He fell in his own eyes, but now it was too late. He lost his true love, his son, and even his wealth.
