Burma, 1945. A young Scottish soldier (Richard Todd) is wounded in a Japanese ambush and rushed to a field hospital. His doctors realise he has only a few weeks to live - but think it best not to tell him.
Instead, they tell the other soldiers on the ward, and request that they make his last few weeks as happy and fulfilled as possible. Unfortunately, young 'Lackie' is not an easy man to befriend. He's cold, dour, proud and aloof. Now 'Yank' (Ronald Reagan), 'Blossom', 'Kiwi', 'Digger', 'Tommy' and Ward Sister Parker (Patricia Neal) must use all their ingenuity to reach 'Lackie'. Finally an impromptu birthday party seems to do the trick and 'Lackie' finds he has friends for the first time in his life. Then, he learns that he is terminally ill and his new friends have known all along - and his new-found happiness is shattered...
