The original film in this franchise came out in 2013, and was directed by Final Destination creator James Wan. The stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren are legendary, and that’s what makes this film franchise so popular. The authenticity in the stories, the reality of the lives of Roger and Carolyn Perron and their children are immortalised on screen for all the scares you could want. Don't forget to turn off the lights; this one gets inside your head. If the first one doesn't spook you enough, move onto film 2 in the franchise and see whether that gives you a chill!

Another terrifying tale directed by James Wan, we’re watching a family go through their son dealing with being a vessel for malevolent spirits. There are plenty of jump scares, screechy violins and odd crackles over baby monitors - all things that make spooky movies make you want to sleep with the light on. It’s not for the kids in the house, so keep it for the grown ups. For the extra scare, watch it in the dark!

It’s an oldie but a goodie! This DVD rental can surely give you a fight for the night. The story is unique, sad and it’s got plenty of creepy moments to keep you engaged and a little terrified the whole way through. You can’t help but note the green hue throughout the movie, and the symbolism is fantastic. Perhaps unplug the house phone line for this one, though, because it would be the wrong moment to get a telephone call!

  • The Woman in Black (2012)

This was initially a stage show and it’s so terrifying on stage you can’t imagine how they’ll make a DVD rental stand out with this one. The thing is, Daniel Radcliffe shows his true acting colours in this film, and it’ll haunt you for weeks. This is a film that focuses on a woman who was wronged in the past, with Radcliffe’s character Arthur Kipps bearing the brunt of that rage. It gets in your head and you’ll be feeling the wobbles for a while over this one!

  • Poltergeist (1982) aka: It's Night Time

We’re not talking about the 2015 Extended Cut version that was brought out - we mean the original, spooky film with Tangina and Carol-Anne being pulled into the TV. The reason this one still can give you the creeps despite the 1980s vibes. There’s no fancy graphics here, and yet the horror in this film (along with the creepy kid) is authentic!
