Hellboy

Splat

(Edit) 19/01/2020

Few good laughs, otherwise dire. I have no idea why they made it. It is nowhere near original films, in fact an insult to them because I decided to watch this because of my enjoyment of first two.

Bushwick

A trip rounds Trumps USA

(Edit) 11/04/2018

A brave, and not completely successful, low budget political thriller based around the idea that red-neck America attempts insurrection against urban co-existence and inadvertently bring the city together in opposition. I enjoyed it. Action on the streets with single hand held camera reminds me of the sixties. Give it a try.

The Mummy

Mummified

(Edit) 11/04/2018

Silly film. But watchable if nothing else to do. Narrative dominated by special effects, and even though I enjoy Tom’s action movies, he really doesn’t get a chance to get into character. Open end for Mummy 2.

Jordskott: Series 1

Don’t blow up forests

(Edit) 06/04/2018

This is a remarkable tense thriller. Once you have suspended your sense of disbelief, you can merge into the mist, water, forest of rural Sweden and follow a truly original story of myth in the natural world. Deeply human and non human tale of land possession and murder, it follows surprising hero’s and bad folk. Once grabbed you are not released till the very last frame which is magical.

The 100: Series 1

Suspend disbelief

(Edit) 29/11/2017

This begins in a rough way, but does find direction. Apart from the deep pessimism about human beings inability to work collectively, and obsessively concerned with barbarism of the survivors of nuclear wipeout, the story grips you. Almost against better judgement you identify with characters who don’t really deserve it. In the end an enjoyable romp, lots of handsome youth, and well constructed narrative. Into series two now, which notches up the terror somewhat. Suspension of disbelief essential.

Ghost in the Shell

Got me

(Edit) 18/10/2017

Much, much better than expected from previous reviews. Scarlett didn’t disappoint. As long as you remember it’s a fantasy SF then go out for the ride. Film, direction, structure superb.

Blue Jasmine

Glad it ended

(Edit) 18/10/2017

At last it is over. I had expected to laught, but found it difficult to even smile. Well made and well acted misery from the land of Trump.
