Apostasy

An underrated little gem

(Edit) 19/02/2019

Apostasy succeeds in what it sets out to do: to show the dilemma a Jehovah's witness family face when it comes up against the harsh reality of life. The mother, brought up as a witness and a staunch defender of it, realises the price she has to pay when one daughter dies for lack of a blood transfusion, and the other deserts her for not saving the daughter, her sister.

Poignant, moving and well acted.

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool

Over-rated

(Edit) 28/08/2018

Found it curiously lacklustre and downbeat. Lost interest in, and caring about, the characters long before the end. Domestic scenes in Liverpool looked more like a 1960s kitchen sink drama. Disappointing.

Molly's Game

Flatters to deceive

(Edit) 27/07/2018

Strong acting, crackerjack dialogue (as you would expect) can't hide the fact that the sum of its parts is less than its whole. Do we really care about the characters? I didn't, but it's a slick movie asking you to root for characters that are basically sleazy.

Midnight Cowboy

Still a Classic

(Edit) 29/05/2018

I thought it might have shown its age, but It's stood up well to passing time. It's still a moving portrayal of an unlikely friendship, loneliness in the big city and the thin dividing line between life and death. It affected me as much 50 years later as it did when I first saw it.

Hidden Figures

Entertaining but Predictable

(Edit) 05/02/2018

To an extent this film was about segregation for dummies - i.e.written in a juvenile and predictable way - to those of us who lived through

that era at least. Nevertheless entertaining in an unexciting sort of way.

Nebraska

Wise and Witty

(Edit) 22/01/2018

A thoroughly entertaining film that has wise and witty things to say about family life, growing older and relationships. No scene outstays its welcome; every scene makes its point. You can't fail to be moved, and moved to laughter, by Nebraksa.
