Behemoth

Just stunning

(Edit) 13/03/2020

Part documentary, part art house, this is a wonderfully photographed depiction of the purgatorial lives led in heavy mining and steel making in pursuit of China’s economic miracle. It is slow moving and with little narrative, except for some poetry based on Dante’s inferno. If you liked Koyaanisquatsi this is close.

Just in passing I think it is a bit unfair of DJ to blame capitalism as this was entirely under dirigiste communism, you'd never get away with it here.

Toy Story 4

A bit sad

(Edit) 09/03/2020

Beautifully animated of course but I think we all knew Disney would eventually drown Pixar in a load of PC schmaltz.

So here we have previous male leads demoted to incompetence, all women to be super magnificent in all their life choices and of course a sequel too far since all sequels make money regardless.

Destroyer

To be clear it’s much more a drama than an action movie

(Edit) 27/09/2019

Wonderful, someone has actually employed decent script writers for a change; has assumed the audience has more than the attention span of a goldfish and can cope with a cleverly revealed, non linear narrative; has not used shaky cam, hyperkinetic cutting nor cgi and has hired good actors to bring the characters to life. In the current days of Marvel and Disney I had almost given up hope. A proper film for adults. Well done.

Terminal

The case for the defence

(Edit) 08/03/2019

This is a Noir/Art movie. That alone should let you know whether it’s for you or not. If you want a straight thriller be guided by the other reviews and avoid.

However I found it stylish and blackly amusing with a witty script and that clearly attracted the great cast. It’s visual feast and above all else manages to be novel in a time when so much is formulaic and safe. Plus I found it genuinely enjoyable.

Crazy Rich Asians

Pleasant entertainment

(Edit) 01/03/2019

Elizabeth Bennet goes to Pemberly; only with Asians in Singapore.

Unfortunately it is not Clueless II (This time it's multicultural)
