- Real Madrid (6 times winners) and Liverpool (twice) staged an epic battle in French territory. With a lack of attacking intent from both sides, it was a dour affair with few clear goal-scoring chances. Neither side wanted to lose and the game was fought in the midfield, where the Reds certainly did not lack strength. Chances only started to appear in the last 10 minutes as Liverpool's forwards started to find chinks in the Real defense. With 8 minutes to go, Alan Kennedy sprinted into the box to score from a narrow angle. Phil Thompson lifted the trophy and Bob Paisley became the only manager to have won three European Cups.
