Made in 1943 'The Gentle Sex' highlights, in a sometimes amusing manner, the contribution women made to the war effort and the rather patronising approach they had to endure from some of their male counterparts. During World War 2 seven women are thrown together in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Despite being from very different backgrounds the women quickly form a bond and become firm friends. Once they have completed their basic training the women are given their assignments. Four of them become lorry drivers and are ordered to undertake a dangerous mission driving their vehicles through the night in bad weather to make an important delivery to a boatyard. The remaining women are put in charge of anti-aircraft guns. Despite the opposition from some of the men they encounter the film highlights the enormous contribution made by women during the War.
