Synopsis:
"Wuthering Heights" (Hurlevent), is one of unique auteur Jacques Rivette's most minimalist films. Updated to the Cevennes countryside circa 1930's, this romantic tragedy is played out by the characters as though all is preordained. The three thematic dream sequences in the beginning, middle and end, allow the film to have a sense of freedom and escape beyond the boundaries of the narrative. Rivette is obsessed by the use of function and mystery in this film, creating something both sublime and devastating. This is the most original and breath-taking version of "Wuthering Heights" ever made.

nicely strange - Wuthering Heights review by pete b

Spoiler Alert

previously unacquainted with the tale of heathcliff, i thought that before reading the book i'd watch one of the many film versions, and wishing to avoid a hollywood version for all the obvious critical reasons, i chose the monsieur rivette's rendition.

it's a little odd, and takes a while to work any sort of magic.

in particular it feels very 'staged', the movements strongly choreographed, but after a bit i enjoyed and was captivated by the 'balletic' atmosphere of the piece, even if it did not in particular pull on any heartstrings.

worth watching, tbs.
