Rent Like a Brother (2005)

Comme un frère

When 18-year-old aspiring actor Sebastien leaves his small French town and moves to Paris, he reinvents himself, changing his name to Zack, after the lead character in his favorite American TV show. Every night he cruises the city's most fashionable gay bars, hoping to find love but despite numerous partners, he's unable to find emotional or sexual fulfillment. When his old friend Romain calls and announces that he is coming to Paris, Zack's unrequited feelings are rekindled and he is forced to make some big decisions about his life and how to live it honestly.

Like a Brother review by TB

A short feature film or long short film?

In less than an hour we follow Zack which he calls himself when moving to Paris to stay with his father. He has left a small town to "come out" and we see him having one-night stands before finding someone who is not only after "fresh virgin meat". Quite explicit - we even see a glimpse of an erection.

Like a Brother review by GS

Short but touching coming of age drama

Like a Brother is the tale of Zack, a pretty blonde lad who has come to Paris to explore his sexuality, however it is quickly discovered that he has left something behind in his past. That something is his best friend who he pines over. The flashback scenes are touching and at times a little erotic as the sexual tension between the two begins to show through. However the story is hardly original. Young men with unrequited crushes on their best friends have been around in movies for a long time and Like A Brother has nothing new to say on the subject. The performances are generally good, and for the gay men out there, there is enough naked flesh and erotic moments to keep our interest. However at a running time of just under an hour and a rather abrupt inconclusive ending some viewers may feel slightly cheated.
