  • Doctor Strange (2016) Marvel's Doctor Strange

    Play trailer
    1h 50min

Modern Marvel Cinematic Universe is ever expanding, this time Doctor Strange stepping onto the silver screen. Formidable cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong and Mads Mikkelsen among others. The film follows Stephen Strange, a rather egoistic neurosurgeon who is left seriously injured after a car accident, and not being able to continue his work. He embarks on a journey to healing, which in turn leads him into the world of mystic arts. There he is drawn into the battle against menacing dark forces. On this mission, he displays (almost) full potential of his new powers. If you want the full Doctor Strange experience, rent it now on Blu-ray 3D and see the powerful magic of cinematography.

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016) Captain America 3

    Play trailer
    2h 22min

Alongside Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War was the highest rated comic book/superhero film in 2016. Rather uncommon for a sequel, let alone a third instalment in the franchise (after The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier). Main selling point of the film is the rising conflict among the Avengers, shaking up Marvel Cinematic Universe and making us choose: team Captain or team Iron Man. After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the government pressures the whole team to sign Sokovia Accords, to reign them in but not all are keen to do so. Be sure to check out Civil War on Blu-ray, because it comes with insightful featurettes about Captain and Iron Man, the making of and always funny gag reel.

  • Deadpool (2016)

    1h 43min

Deadpool just might be the best comic book superhero film to date. Period. Definitely the best comedy in the genre anyway, even though he doesn't like being called a superhero. Ryan Reynolds was born to play "merc with a mouth" originating in the X-Men universe. Every scene in which he breaks the 4th wall, makes audience like him more in spite of film's possible flaws. Blu-ray edition comes packed with special features guaranteed to make you laugh, including deleted/extended scenes and Deapool's fun sack (why not find out what it really is). Tim Miller's directing is on point while he skilfully let the main star shine, which did result in 2 Golden Globes nominations.

  • 300 (2007)

    Play trailer
    111 minutes

Epic 300 is the film that put the director Zack Snyder on a map of sorts, after this he made Watchmen – another comic book film. While the story of 300 Spartans and the ancient Battle of Thermopylae originated in the Greek legend, it is based on the Frank Miller graphic novel. The film dazed with its camera work, production design, and cinematography in general, but it was the talented cast who made the film work as it did. It includes Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Dominic West, Michael Fassbender, Rodrigo Santoro – many actors who later on went to become quite big stars. We highly recommend the Blu-ray edition with behind the scenes look, additional scenes and various webisodes.

    Zack Snyder

The trouble starts when Sullivan's son witnesses his crime and discovers what really his father does for a living. Their relationship is put to the test while trying to save their lives running from the mob as well as look for revenge on those who wronged him. In the main roles of Mike Sullivan and his son are ever great Tom Hanks and Tyler Hoechlin. There is more on DVD to keep you excited, from feature length audio commentary by director to HBO special: The making of Road Perdition.

  • Watchmen (2009)

    Play trailer
    2h 35min

Zack Snyder's Watchmen belongs in the few comic book/superhero films set in the past. Precisely, in an alternative 1985 where superheroes live as a part of the society. Watchmen is a group of those superheroes whose mission is to watch over the humanity (hence the name). The plot begins when one of their colleagues is murdered, and a vigilante named Rorschach chooses to investigate it further. Even though it's set in an alternate universe, there is a Cold War tension between the USA and the Soviet Union. This is especially demonstrated with the existence of the "Doomsday Clock" which is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. Director Zack Snyder managed to bring together a nice cast, including Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Carla Cugino and Stephen McHattie. To make it even more fun, among special features you can find bonus material such as The Phenomenon: The Comic That Changed Comics and Real Superheroes, Real Vigilantes.

  • Thor (2011)

    Play trailer
    1h 50min

Thor is the first comic book and superhero film that shifted the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Earth to the mystical realm of Asgard - for a while at least. Taken straight out of Norse mythology, this is where we meet the mighty Thor, the god of thunder himself. Chris Hemsworth plays a very believable Norse god, his physique and mannerism following what we think a Norse god would be like. Charming but arrogant Thor is banished to Earth when he proves to be a bit too reckless to become Asgard's ruler and there he is forced to live among mere mortals; this results in a good action film as well as some precious funny scenes. The cast is complimented with Anthony Hopkins in the role of Odin, Tom Hiddleston as Loki (became his most recognizable character), Idris Elba, and many more.

  • V for Vendetta (2005)

    Play trailer
    128 minutes

V for Vendetta is one of the best and highest rated film in general, not just a comic book or superhero film. The plot is set in a British dystopian future where we meet a mysterious freedom fighter, donning a mask of Guy Fawkes, bent on revenge, or vendetta, and all words starting with the letter V. He is powerfully voiced by Hugo Weaving, but Natalie Portman also shines bright by his side as Evey, a working-class girl caught up in the fight against the Big Brother and totalitarian government. V for Vendetta film is based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, but the screenplay came from the capable hands of Lilly and Lana Wachowski. The team completed with director James McTeigue delivers a highly stylized and visually stunning motion picture. You can check it out on DVD/Blu-ray and enjoy in some special features as well: designing the near future, cat power montage, SNL digital short, etc.

  • The Dark Knight (2008)

    Play trailer
    2h 25min

The new-ish Batman reboot began in 2005 with Batman Begins and continued with The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. The Dark Knight has been chosen for this list because it is most often cited as the best of the bunch, especially praised the role of Joker which has, even more, became iconic due to Heath Ledger's untimely death. He thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. You can rent the trilogy on 4K Blu-ray and get a plethora of special features and flawless picture and sound quality.

    Christopher Nolan

Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart

  • Batman (1989)

    Play trailer
    121 minutes

Tim Burton’s directorial journey into the comic book/superhero films gave us a different, more creative, take on the Dark Knight and the villains. DC’s superhero film shows a lot we should admire, from production design to Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of infamous Joker. Bruce Wayne’s origin story and plot haven’t really deviated from its beginnings, but it is the style, some would say claustrophobic feeling, and the Tim Burton’s trademark darkness that make this Batman worth watching and still relevant. Two soundtracks followed the film, one by Danny Elfman and other by Prince; both were commercially successful. Blu-ray edition gives you a glimpse into Burton’s Gotham City with director’s commentary, legends of the Dark Knight, and much more.

    Tim Burton
    Cast:
Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger
