Honeyland

a fascinating film

(Edit) 06/06/2023

it is a beautiful human story of loss and betrayal with a potent pararel with the devastation that the comercialisation of food is infliciting on the natural environment.

I saw it a week ago and it is stil vivid in my mind.

Eye in the Sky

magnificent triller to praise the armed forces and governments -oUK and USA-

(Edit) 01/02/2021

goood script, well acted, gripping thriller and the message is an uncritical praise of the military and governments of UK and USA who spend an agonising hour trying to save the life of a little girl int he middle of an antiterrorist operation.

Hard to believe such ethical delicacy thinking about actual operations in Afganistan and the invasion of Iraq -to this day-

Neruda

Excellent script

(Edit) 29/07/2020

this film is not just about Neruda and his escape from Chile, it is a dialogue between Neruda and the secret police agent who chases him.

This dialogue is fiction, the creation of scriptwriter Guillermo Calderon, but so poetic, that I thought it came from notes by Neruda himself.

A delightful film.

In Between

unsatisfactory

(Edit) 22/07/2020

the film feels like a carbon copy of light Hollywood films which approximate a 90 minute comercial for clothes, drink and cigarretes. The characters are stilted and with little depth . the director shows the struggles of young Palestinian women to assert themselves in between their traditional families and the permisive Tel Aviv scene. however, that permisivenes refer only to clothes, make up, drink and cigarrets. there is no reference to the discrimination that Palestinian citizens and workers face in Israel. also there is no single shot of armed Israeli soldiers in the streets, who are ubiquitous in Israeli streets. from this perspective, the film becomes a 90 minute comercial for Israeli propaganda of being a democratic society and a rainbow society.

as a saving grace, the relationship between the thre young women is creative and heart warming.

Nocturnal Animals

American usual "formula"

(Edit) 04/05/2020

90 minutes of American comercial: the big house, the sexy woman, the past heart break, the midless violence, the disillusioned cop, the intergenerational conflict , all wrapped up in overflowing emotions and lots of money. the only thing i enjouyed was the Arizona desert.

i am sure you have better things to do with your 90 minutes than watch this!

Burning

unintelligeable if yo don't speak the language

(Edit) 14/10/2019

only about 10% of the dialogue is translated and the subtitles are off the screen so you can only read 50% of the 10% = you will read 5% of the dialogue.

Shoplifters

More subtitles please!

(Edit) 24/06/2019

enchanting film but jut about 10% of the dialogue was subtitled so we couldn't understand the climax of the plot.

further more, the few subtitles appeared too far down the screen and they were difficult to read.

as it is, the film is not suitable for non Japanese speakers.

I'd love to see it again with proper subtitles!
