The Courier

Pleasantly Surprised

(Edit) 28/12/2021

Fantastic performance by Benedict Cumberbatch in one of the most enjoyable films of the year. Not an action film in any way, nor filled with suspense, but a brilliant retelling of the story of an ordinary business man who was drawn into espionage despite his own concerns and (if the film is accurate) who made a difference in such a way that quite possibly nuclear war with the USSR was avoided. Watch more for the retelling of a story that most will not have heard of and also for a fine and powerful performance from DB.

Unhinged

Pandemic Filler

(Edit) 22/11/2021

Not a brilliant movie. Russell Crowe is great, the actress gives a good performance, but there are so many irregularities with regards to how a person would actually respond to the various in the movie that it’s pretty unbelievable. Worth a watch to enjoy RC in his grizzly menacing glory. Apart from that, I was wishing for the movie to end!

Blade Runner 2049

Absolutely Brilliant Film

(Edit) Updated 19/08/2020

First off, I loved the original film even though it was well before my time. Denis Villeneuve had a tough act to follow but thankfully he delivers in style! Atmosphere, superb visuals, great acting from Ryan Gosling + cast, fascinating storyline exploring what it means to be human and follows the original storyline of the Replicants wanting to be free of their human masters (and seeming more human than the humans), fantastic sound track from Hans Zimmer ... just a joy to watch. This is a bit of a marmite film, my friend hated it (so boring) but this is not a fast paced shoot them up, this is cinematic story telling at its finest with a slow burning plot throughout the 2.5+ hours. Can't wait for Villeneuves next film, Dune.

Sorry to Bother You

Not funny

(Edit) 23/10/2019

So the trailer is funny. The film is not funny. If you want to watch a funny film, then avoid Sorry to bother you. If only I hadn’t bothered :)

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Big fun for Ant Movie

(Edit) 26/03/2019

This film is easy to watch, lots of fun, great CGI, and a good storyline that ties in with the Avengers: Infinity War film.

Loving Vincent

A wonderful film

(Edit) 07/02/2019

I hadn’t heard of or seen the film when it was released and it was only after reading some reviews that I decided to add the film to my list and ......

How happy am i that I did!

A wonderful film entirely composed of paintings (all painted a la style of Van Gogh) that animate the story of a man Armand Roulin who is sent by his father Joseph Roulin (a postman who befriended VG due to the large number of letters that VG wrote and passed to him for delivery, and also the subject of one of VG most famous paintings) to deliver the letter that VG wrote before his death to his brother Theo. The story then takes on a style of Midsomer Murders as Armand begins to ask questions as to how VG died and whether or not he committed suicide. The film also gives the viewer an understanding of VG life, and by the end of it you will understand why the film is titled Loving Vincent as you can’t help but fall in love with a guy who had many troubles in his life, thought he would amount to nothing, who sold one painting in his lifetime and yet simply wanted to communicate the beauty and emotion of life through his art.

A truly unique and once in a lifetime film. Don’t miss it!!

A Ghost Story

Ghost this is not

(Edit) 22/11/2018

This is not a supernatural, scary or exciting film to watch. It’s effectively a story about the enduring power of love and loss. Think of it as an arty film, that some people will love, but more people will hate. The film requires the viewer to be somebody who looks for meaning and understanding of the subtlety of the story as it progresses. It really is a slow paced film, many quiet scenes, and more melancholic than less. I’m glad I watched it, but given the chance to watch it again I would probably give it a miss!

CHiPs

Just not funny

(Edit) 17/03/2018

Imagine being served chicken pie at a restaurant. The pastry is dry, the chicken is quorn and not real meat, and it’s just bland and tasteless and it turns out to be one of the worst pies you’ve ever tasted. Basically sums up the film. Switched off after 30 mins.
