Shameless and tender, exciting and witty, dark and erratic, 'At Night All Cats Are Black' pays homage to the tradition of underground and queer cinema, the poetics of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's fantasy and the humorous deconstructions of detective films carried out by directors such as Bruno Dumont. Valentin Merz's dehut feature, Special Mention for Best First Film at the Locarno Film Festival, is driven hy the right to lose oneself and to feel lost in life, in filmmaking and in sex. We start in the shooting of a debauched film in the Swiss forests and after the mgsterious disappearance of the director, we end up in the Mexican jungle, where the "muxes", an expression of trans identity typical of the Zapotec culture, live. - Actors:

Baffling, Post-modern, Tricksy, Meandering Mess of a Film, set in a pretty Germanic forest - At Night All Cats Are Black review by PV
At one stage in this film a character says "I'm lost." You and me both, pal!
This is a confusing film, ,maybe purposefully so. It's post-modern. Do you see? Ha ha.
The wafer-thin plot is tacked on to give it some structure at least, but much is unexplained. That makes it baffling and all very MEH.
One problem here is the viewer does not care about the characters - a problem if one goes missing or worse. WHY SHOULD WE CARE?
The tacked-on ending (NO SPOILERS) seems an excuse to indulge in exotic dancing. The scenery looks great - mostly it takes place in a very Germanic forest.
Messy post-modern slop then. Enjoyable? Me. Good for those who're trying to learn or improve foreign languages as there are several spoken here - German, French, Spanish.
