Midway through his legendary run as James Bond, Roger Moore took a brutal detour from 007 into gritty crime cinema, swapping high-tech gadgets for sawn-off shotguns in the hard-hitting Mafia thriller 'The Executors'. Moore stars as Ulisse, a British-educated lawyer fixing high-stakes problems for his uncle, the boss of a Stateside crime family. When a fortune in contraband are smuggled into America inside a large ancient wooden Sicilian cross ordered by his uncle, the cargo is violently hijacked at the San Francisco docks, resulting in the Mafia Don being accused of orchestrating the sacrilegious plot. Ulisse, teaming up with Charlie, a racing driver with an adventurous streak (Stacy Keach; Mike Hammer, Titus), is summoned to unmask the real culprits before a full-scale mob war erupts. Director Maurizio Lucidi possessed a rare gift for delivering what Stacy Keach calls, in this disc's interview, "pure entertainment". Snapped up for U.S. drive-in distribution by AIP - the grindhouse powerhouse built on the exploitation blueprint forged by Roger Corman - the full-throttle 'The Executors', alongside Lucidi's moodier thriller Stateline Motel (starring Ursula Andress and Eli Wallach), forms a unique diptych that represents a bold collision of raw Italian pulp poliziottesco and hard-edged American noir. - Actors:
