Munezo Katagiri is a samurai in 19th century feudal Japan who finds himself torn between loyalty to a dying tradition and his love for a lowly farm girl. The film begins with Munezo bidding farewell to Yaichiro, his friend and fellow samurai as he takes up a new post. Munezo is in love with his family's maid but knows that he cannot marry someone of her inferior social standing, because it would violate his clan's creed. In a changing society that is seeing the replacement of the sword with the gun, Munezo's ambivalence about his way of life comes to a head when he is ordered to kill a traitor: his old friend Yaichiro.

A tale of a reluctant samurai

Set in 19th century Japan, the story of 'The Hidden Blade' revolves around a samurai named Katagiri, who repeatedly sees his duty as a samurai and traditional culture as a barrier to true happiness. Overall, 'The Hidden Blade' is quite similar to director Yoji Yamada's earlier film 'The Twilight Samurai' as in the main theme within the film centers around a tender love story involving a reluctant samurai who wishes for an uncomplicated life. Though not quite as good as Yamada's previous effort, 'The Hidden Blade', it's still a very good film, beautifully directed and highly recommended.
