Three sisters (Phyllis Calvert, Anne Crawford, Dulcie Gray) all have very different experiences of marriage.
Gainsborough was also celebrated for its ladies, and with good reason. Philip Calvert is terrific as a woman who marries a nice guy (real-life husband Peter Murray Hill), loses a child and struggles to hold the family together. Anne Crawford has a ball as the self absorbed philanderer who scarcely notices her own child and prefers the occasional young stud to her sincere but profoundly boring husband. Dulcie Gray is the sensitive sister who was born to suffer and the majority of whose offspring have a healthy hatred for their father (he does, after all, threaten at one point to drown their pet dog!)
