This complete collection comprises of all 9 episodes of the original 'Storyteller' series (1989). Featuring both human actors and creations from Jim Henson's Creature Shop, in this clever retelling of classic folk tales, fables and legends such as 'The Three Ravens' and 'The Heartless Giant'. The series stars Academy Award nominee John Hurt (1981, Best Actor, The Elephant Man) in the title roles. Aided by his cynical dog, Hurt narrates fascinating tales that combine humour, intrigue and magic. Academy-Award winning writer/director Anthony Minghella (1997, Best Director, The English Patient) wrote the screenplay for all these fabulous stories. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Miranda Richardson, Jane Horrocks, Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce, Brenda Blethyn, Jennifer Saunders, Joely Richardson and Dawn French. Also included in this set is 'The Storyteller, Greek Myths' (1997). This imaginative series of 4 episodes, features both human actors and creations again from Jim Henson's Creature Shop in the retelling of classic Greek mythology including 'Daedalus and Icarus', 'Orpheus and Eurydice', 'Perseus and Gorgon', and 'Theseus and the Minotaur'. Truth to tell the first series of European folk tales, with John Hurt as the Story Teller, is the better of the two, whch is why I haven't returned it yet. The second disk, with Michael Gambon, is OK but I sent it back after one watch. Need I say more?
