Eliza Carthy is an English musician who is revolutionising traditional music. She is the latest in her illustrious folk family to bring her music to a new generation and will be remembered as a one of the vital artists in England's musical history who is at the forefront of a revival of traditional music. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize she mixes traditional music with other genres including classical and drum and bass which is how she is bringing her music to a new generation. Billy Bragg says: "She takes something that everyone's familiar with and gives it another depth, another powerful sensibility. I think that's really her great strength". Her mother came from a folk music family who toured in the 1960's - The Watersons. Norma was one of the pioneers of English traditional music. Her father Martin Carthy has been a figurehead in the folk scene for the last 40 years and he influenced American singers like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. The documentary follows Eliza to her studio on the Scottish borders, where she performs new material. Much of her work is rooted in English traditional music but she is a strong believer that folk music shouldn't be pigeon-holed: "I want to be able to watch X-Factor and go "OK" and then I want to be able to go to Sheffield and sing Christmas carols with 200 people in a pub and know that it's part of the same thing". Comedian Stewart Lee believes that music is tied up with identity and says: "What's been really good about Eliza's music is that she is able to take on board the different influences that have come over. It's much more like a Billy Bragg idea of what a national music should be than it is a Tory Party political conference soundtrack". Billy Bragg is a huge fan: "Eliza's violin playing and what she does with it and how she pitches it and where it begins and ends is a marvel to me because it never begins where I think it's going to begin, it never goes where I expect it to go and it never ends where I expect it's going to end".
