"The Absent One" initially takes us back to 1994, when a young twins found brutally murdered in their home. Police investigations point to a group of rich kids from a nearby boarding school, but when a local outsider pleads guilty and convicted of the murders, he considers the matter to be settled. But 20 years later becoming Deputy Chief Inspector Carl Mørck (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) contacted by the twins' father, a retired policeman, who had never given up hope of being able to solve the case. Carl soon realize that something is wrong and he, along with his assistant Assad (Fares Fares) and their new secretary Rose (Johanne Louise Schmidt), open the case again. Soon thrown them into an intense search for a woman, Kimmie (Danica Curcic), who has been missing since the murders took place. But Carl and Assad are not the only ones chasing Kimmie. There she knows about what happened in 1994 is dangerous for a group of influential men at the top of society, and they will do everything they can to prevent the past from catching up with them.
