When war broke out in Lebanon in July 2006, renowned local artists Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige found they no longer knew "what to write, what stories to recount, what images to show". So what could cinema do? They responded by inviting an icon of cinema, Catherine Deneuve, to visit Lebanon and bear witness to the impact of the conflict. Her guide would be Rabih Mroue, a Lebanese actor and a perfect foil to Deneuve - every bit as enigmatic and strong willed, especially about his country. A uniquely inventive composite of scripted scenes, documentary footage and improvised travelogue, Je Veux Voir follows Mroue as he escorts Deneuve through the shattered concrete and twisted metal of Beirut's bombed buildings, to the heavily armed borders at the very far reaches of the country. Along this eventful journey we discover the destruction, fear and painful loss of a country devastated by war, while also glimpsing at sharply poignant moments of reflection, beauty and quiet hope for the future.
