Synopsis:
Fred tours Britain searching out magnificent monuments, from ancient earthworks through to modern day structures. He looks at how and why things were built and what sort of tools and materials were used and how buildings were adapted and altered to meet changing needs.

Places of Worship
Over the centuries the best architects, builders and craftsmen reserved their finest work for places of worship and Fred takes us on a tour of some of the best in the land, starting at the church of St. Walburge in Preston where he climbs the tallest church steeple in England. He moves on to outstanding cathedrals with his first stop being York Minster where he describes how the flying buttress works, which was the latest innovation of its time, and has a go at carving stone. Next he visits St. Paul's Cathedral and Fred explains why the magnificent dome doesn't collapse. His final stop is one of his favourite churches, the marble church in the Parish of Bodelwyddan with its wonderful steeple, tower and fine carvings.
Places of Work
Fred takes the opportunity of viewing our places of work both past and present and starts his tour by looking at old agricultural buildings. He has a chance to try the art of thatching on a 1,000-year-old tithe barn in Sussex and not far away at Winchester, he visits the Hospital of St. Cross: Britain's oldest almshouse dating back to medieval times. In Chatham he looks around the very old dockyards and appreciates the 18th and 19th century buildings and the carpentry that went into their construction. But it is in London that he is confronted by total contrasts side by side: the beautiful Victorian wrought iron and glass Leadenhall Market and the ultra modern stainless steel and glass Lloyd's Building where he discovers a surprise on the top floor.
