The award-winning film Pianomania follows Stefan Knupfer, Steinway & Sons' Master Tuner in Vienna, as he works with some of the world's best-known concert pianists, including Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Lang Lang and Alfred Brendel. Warm, and at times gently humorous, the film demonstrates how unsung hero Knupfer is pivotal to realising the vision of each virtuoso. A central theme to the film is the year spent by Pierre-Laurent Aimard preparing for the recording of Bach's 'Art of Fugue' and how he works with Stefan Knupfer to identify the right piano and then achieve that elusive perfect tone.
An entire film about piano tuning in Vienna. This has got to be the most cult / niche film I have seen. This piano tuner is so absorbed with tone that it becomes slowly more and more amusing. At the end I was really fascinated as to whether he was genuine or sad or mad or brilliant. There are some pleasant interludes by piano geniuses to make it very watchable.
