- Herbert Lom and Jason Robards star as a disfigured murderer and a duplicitous actor, locking horns over their love for the same woman in this sumptuous-looking arthouse horror that riffs on Poe's classic murder mystery. One of Gordon Hessler and Chris Wicking's acclaimed run of films for AIP UK...It is presented here as both Hessler's original director's cut and AIP's re-edited theatrical version. Madeline (Christine Kaufmann), the leading lady of a Parisian "grand guignol" theatre troupe, is haunted by visions of an axe-wielding maniac.
