This is the definitive story of the Wimbledon Championships of 1976. In the middle of a blistering heat-wave, twenty-year old Bjorn Borg became the first Swedish player to win Wimbledon, whilst Chris Evert triumphed for a second time, at the tender age of twenty-one. The Gentleman's Singles saw the shock departure of the two top seeds, Arthur Ashe and Jimmy Connors, in the fourth round. This left the menacing llie Nastase to fight it out with the likes of the young Swede, Borg and the big server from Tennessee, Roscoe Tanner, for the most coveted prize in Tennis. The Final would be an exciting all-European contest, the first since 1936. In the Ladies' Singles, a dispute over equal prize money, and the threat of a 1977 boycott by some of the players, brought tension away from the courts. Back on the courts, and with temperatures in the 90s, a courageous Sue Barker attempted to overcome a young Martina Navratilova and make the Semi-Finals. However, it was another home favourite Virginia Wade who fought through to the last four only to be beaten convincingly by the 1971 champion, Australian, Evonne Cawley. The Final would be a close fought battle with number one seed, Chris Evert. The film is a fascinating social history of The Championships, including material in and around the tournament, from the devoted crowds to the pre-match locker-room.
