Rent Deep Breath (aka Le Souffle) (2001)

David is a teenager like any others. His world is filled with loud music, imaginary encounters with centre-folds< and heroic fights on make-believe battlefields. With his mother away, and his father nowhere to be found, David is forced to stay on his uncle's farm, where life lacks the excitement he craves. But the monotony of country living is about to be broken as his uncle and a collection of his friends get together for an afternoon of excessive eating and drinking, to which David is invited. Later that evening, David goes to meet a friend in the woods., Here, the effects of his drink-fuelled initiation and of the frustration he feels generally find a brutal and horrifying outlet that will change his life forever... A powerful and exquisite study of one boy's journey into the treacherous terrain of manhood, this startling film from the wunderkind of modern French cinema is pure cinematic poetry.

Deep Breath (aka Le Souffle) review by Tim from London

Disappointing coming of age drama

The film tells the story of a day in the life of a young boy who is on the verge of adulthood and the terrible events that unfold. There is very little narrative and hardly any explanation of the events (except references to absent fathers) - so there is little empathy or interest in any of the characters. Some interesting scenes where the farmers play cards and drink - but overall rather dull and pointless. Word of warning - if you dislike scenes of animal cruelty (including slaughter) avoid this film.
