Long, lean, raven-haired model turned actress Makiko Esumi is Miyuki Minazuki, an assassin in black kimono and high-heel boots better known as Stray Cat. Rated No. 3 in the Assassins Guild, she's given the chance to advance up the ladder with a contract to take out No. 1. However, she must vie with other ambitious killers and so begins a long, bloody fight for control.

From the above description the initial impression of an Asian action flick would forming in your mind. The experience of Pistol Opera is somewhat different.
Any killing is extremely stylistic and full of metaphors. The whole film is reminiscent of a lavish opera, with the actors combining physical performance with any vocal lines. Many of the sets are minimalist and are clearly set on a stage. Suzuki-san has a real taste for visual flair and memorable colour schemes. So much so, that you soon dispense with the plot just to see what his imagination can conjour up next.
Pistol Opera is enjoyable, a unique entry in the Kill Bill genre. For a western comparison look to Tarsem Singh’s The Cell, which also suffers from a shallow plot, but is a joy to behold.
