Orphan Black: Series 2

Ok

(Edit) 04/03/2020

I loved the first series, but this series doesn't live up to it unfortunately imho. I found myself getting bored halfway through.

Rocketman

Disappointing

(Edit) 21/02/2020

Not very good although Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell were excellent, and of course the songs were good. Much preferred the Freddy Mercury film. Also, apparently his father was misrepresented as being much colder than he actually was. The film was spoiled for me by being a damaged disc which froze twice and flickered here and there.

The Haunting of Hill House: Series 1

Quite scary

(Edit) 21/02/2020

I expected this to be a remake of the film of the same name, but it was very different. I'll definitely be watching the next series. Good entertainment.

Yesterday

Very entertaining,

(Edit) 10/02/2020

Good idea as, if nothing else, it's a chance to hear the wonderful songs the Beatles wrote. The story holds up too and it's thoroughly enjoyable on all levels. The acting is great too.

Annihilation

Zzzzzzzzzzz

(Edit) 10/02/2020

Oh, so slow and nothing much happens until the end, but by then you've guessed what it will be. Don't bother.

The Possession of Hannah Grace

Nothing new

(Edit) 24/01/2020

Predictable story used in several other better films (Autopsy of Jane Doe). Nothing to be frightened of unless this is the first horror film you've seen. Same old same old. Not recommended.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Doesn't live up to the hype

(Edit) 24/01/2020

Apart from being a vehicle for Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, who show what good actors they are here, this is disjointed, violent and messy. Not even sure what it was about, apart from 2 washed-up men still trying to make it in the film business.

Moon

Can't fault this

(Edit) 21/01/2020

Wonderful acting by Sam Rockwell, a good story with a surprising reveal, and beautifully filmed. Can't recommend this enough.

Men in Black: International

Oh dear!

(Edit) 22/12/2019

I love the "Men in Black" movies, so I  thought I'd rent this despite the reviews.  Such a disappointment.  Men in Black 1-3 with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith were superb and compared to those, this was a damp squib - and the dialogue was painful !!  I thought Tessa Thompson was completely miscast, and as a partnership with Chris Hemsworth, it was as dull as ditch-water.  The "pc" element was thrust at us again too - a black woman super-smart compared to her "dumb" sidekick.   Liam Neeson was also miscast- he has far too soft a voice for the Chief of the Department. Not many aliens either, and those there were were poor compared to the other films.  "Pawny" seemed to have come from a completely different film for children!  It was so slow and boring without Tommy & Will wise-cracking and bouncing off each other.  Even Emma Thompson looked thoroughly fed up.  Give it a miss.

Bad Samaritan

Loved it

(Edit) 07/12/2019

Really enjoyed this film as the acting was good and the story really gripped you.  David Tennant made a good villain.  I hadn't seen this advertised anywhere.  Don't know why it didn't get much publicity.  Nice to see a thriller that really does what it says on the tin - I didn't pause the dvd to make a coffee as I do with most films, I was hooked till the end.  Recommended.

High Life

Unrelenting misery

(Edit) 07/12/2019

Oh dear.  I admire Robert Pattinson for not going down the "good-looking leading man" route after The Twilight Saga, but although there was nothing wrong with his acting, this was a pretentious film and rather silly in parts.  I felt thoroughly miserable by the end.  What was Juliette Binoche thinking - the roles must really be drying up - talk about scenery-chewing soft porn!!  The ending was ambiguous but, I thought, apt.  I watched the interview with the Claire Denis afterwards and she was very irritated that the  interviewer hadn't understood the film or the ending - perhaps she should have been less concerned with being arty and more concerned about telling a good story.  Not recommended.

The Pact

Well made and a good story

(Edit) 12/11/2019

When I started to play this film, I realised I had seen it before, but I left it on as I didn't remember much about it.  I'm glad I did, as it's really entertaining and the acting is good.  I did remember the ending half way through, but it was such a good film that I still enjoyed it knowing what would happen.  Recommended.

Line of Duty: Series 3

Riveting

(Edit) 21/10/2019

All the series are terrific, and this is no exception.  Keeps you glued to your chair.  Believable acting and great characters.

Wind River

Loved it!

(Edit) 02/09/2019

*SPOILER ALERT*

Jeremy Renner at his best in this gripping story of murder and retribution.  The snowy landscape and bleakness of the scenery all add to the tension, and this is a good straight-forward story.  Would strongly recommend.  As for the audio being bad, we've given up trying to hear all the dialogue in films, as it's so indistinct sometimes that you can't follow the plot, and we now put the subtitles on to make sure we don't miss anything.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Could have been so good.

(Edit) 02/09/2019

I enjoyed the first half hour or so of this film, and the acting was really good, but as the story unfolded I found myself getting bored and the ending was very poor.  Didn't scare me at all.
