The Father

Fairly harrowing plotline, but a compelling watch and fantastic acting

(Edit) 22/01/2022

You couldn't say this film was awesome, as it dealt with the hugely complex and on many occasions upsetting subject of a parent descending into extreme forgetfulness to the point of pathology - but it was brilliantly acted by a stellar cast and was a compelling watch. There were many times that the film was super confusing (many a time we were asking ourselves, who is this person acting the part of that other person who just appeared 5 minutes ago?), but that just added to the sense of the film's subject, and altogether it was a hugely moving film. Highly recommended!

The Cruel Sea

Fantastic insight into war on the ocean

(Edit) 22/12/2021

Loved this film! It gave a palpable, visceral insight into the horror of war on the ocean. From the life-altering decisions of the captain to the horrifying experiences of the men in the water after their ship sank; and from the technology available at the beginning of the war to the advances made by the end - it was a great watch all the way through. Highly recommended!

Vigil: Series 1

Gripping drama

(Edit) 15/12/2021

Loved this TV series! It felt like a really original story, and was very well acted throughout. The set was amazing - you felt like you were actually on a submarine! I liked how the story integrated the investigation on the sub with the investigation on the land, and it felt very cohesive as a result. Lots of tense moments, and I was really gripped by the story and couldn't wait for the next episode. Highly recommended!

The Dam Busters

Classic film goodness

(Edit) 24/11/2021

A compelling retelling of the Dam Busters tale - and loved finding out some historical film-related factoids afterwards, like: the lady taking the tank measurements in the testing phase was actually Barnes Wallis' daughter in real life! Highly recommended!

Those Who Wish Me Dead

A bit dismal

(Edit) 02/11/2021

Not a bad film, but not a great one either. The performances from the main cast were pretty good, but the whole story was a bit of an odd one and I remained totally emotionally detached from the whole thing. You never really get much information on the reason that the main characters are on the run, and you just get a few random menacing people talking about it in non-specific terms to their hired hitmen, which doesn't particularly help matters. It was all terribly predictable, unfortunately, and I wouldn't recommend this film in the end.

Supernova

Beautiful and poignant

(Edit) 19/10/2021

A beautifully shot film about a life ending, and a partner's struggle to come to terms with the idea of becoming alone. Great performances as you would expect from Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, and some breathtaking scenes of the Lake District. Definitely recommended!

Wild Mountain Thyme

Very bizarre film

(Edit) 28/09/2021

This was such an odd film - I expected so much more given the cast, but in the end the plot was a little confused, the main message seemed to be that stalking someone was a sure fire way to get them to marry you, and I was left feeling very underwhelmed. I'm sure I totally missed the point the writer/director was trying to make, but unfortunately this wasn't a film I would recommend!

Luca

This might just be my new favourite Disney film!

(Edit) 09/09/2021

We love, love, loved this film! A heartwarming tale of friendship and family, with a hilarious cat thrown in for good measure - what's not to like?! A truly original story that was terribly well animated, as you would expect from the Disney masters. Very highly recommended!

Six Minutes to Midnight

A bit slow, but a well acted, interesting story

(Edit) 02/09/2021

Generally a good watch, but it was quiiiiite a slow burn where not a lot happened for much of the film. Very good acting all-round, as you would expect from a film starring Judie Dench, Jim Broadbent and Eddie Izzard! An interesting story, though, and would still recommend!

To Olivia

Heartbreaking and a little dark, but a good film!

(Edit) 04/08/2021

What a cool topic for a film! It was so intriguing to peek into the life of Roald Dahl. Even though a lot of the film was very dark, as a family tries to navigate their way through the death of a beloved child, there was a lovely, positive reconciliation. The film was set against the backdrop of Roald writing his books throughout, and the peach scene was awesome! Good old Augustus. A good film, and definitely recommended!

Nomadland

A beautiful film about a different way of living

(Edit) 26/07/2021

Loved this film! It was beautifully and sensitively shot, and the performances were magnificent. I really liked how the film invited real-life nomads to participate, this really helped give the film a firm layer of authenticity. Frances McDormand put in a stellar performances, as always - I don't think I've seen her in a bad film! Highly recommended!

Blithe Spirit

A fun film!

(Edit) 08/07/2021

This was a very jolly film that romped through Noel Coward's classic story. Very well casted, and fun to watch. Recommended!

Wonder Woman 1984

Good performances and an interesting storyline

(Edit) 30/06/2021

Really liked this film! There were some good performances from the key cast (loved Gal Gadot and Kristen Wiig in this!) and an interesting storyline. It really got us thinking - what would our one wish be? Recommended!

Dreamland

Kind of a strange film, but watchable

(Edit) 16/06/2021

Nothing much really happened in this film, but it was still quite watchable. At its core, it was a coming-of-age film, where a boy on the cusp of manhood gets entwined with a criminal on the run. There are some quite beautiful shots in the film, but also some mighty unusual shots (like the scene in the motel bathroom - we kept wanting the camera to pan right a bit!). All in all, we enjoyed the film, but not sure if we would really recommend it.

Let Him Go

Good film but some gory bits!

(Edit) 21/05/2021

Overall, we really enjoyed this film! It was beautifully told and beautifully acted. There were some pretty gory bits in it, though - that Weboy clan is monstrous! Definitely recommended!
