- A misfit group of unwitting high school students stumble upon a cursed object, an ancient Mayan Death Whistle. They discover that blowing the whistle and the terrifying sound it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down. As the body count rises, the friends investigate the origins of the deadly artifact in a desperate effort to stop the horrifying chain of events that they have set in motion.

Hugely Enjoyable Solid Horror Bunkum with a Satisfying Smorgasbord of Death (with added Nick Frost!) - Whistle review by PV
OK so British short story writer M.R. James does not get a credit here BUT his WHISTLE AND I'LL COME TO YOU (1904) is surely the source. I've read his many ghost stories and many still work. The classic NIGHT OF THE DEMON (1957) - which Kate Bush sampled for the Hounds of Love ("It's in the trees! It's coming!") - is based on his story CASTING THE RUNES. M.R. James was and is the master.
Always great to see Nick Frost in anything. He's not in the half-hour EXTRAS film much but that's well worth watching to hear from the British director (who's filmed GANGS OF LONDON a lot) and Canadian writer of horror films. And this is a solid horror that satisfies.
Imaginative deaths are always great 'grand guignol' fun - as in Final Destination, or old-school The Omen, I suppose. A clever conceit at its heart even though lots of stuff is never explained. But in horror films, you can get away with that! I liked the setting in a steeltown too, could be Ohio or West Virginia or similar, smalltown rust belt.
Yes, it's all hokum and updated to tick a few boxes re LGBTQRST+ and race, which is fine. It does get a tad bogged down in family and relationship dynamics in the second half and that loses the film focus a bit, but not enough to spoil it.
This is what I call a Friday Night film, perfect to watch with mates and takeaway/drinks, or in a packed cinema - which may be noisier than a busy farmyard but with horror films like this, and all the scares and screaming, who cares? Shakespeare, it ain't.
One of the best neat little gruesome horror flicks I've watched for a while.
WATCH through the end credits to see the Epilogue, a coda which may or may not work.
