Geoffrey Rush was born in Toowoomba, in Queensland, Australia on July 6th 1951. He showed a budding interest in theatre and made his stage debut in 1971. He has worked as both actor and director with the Queensland Theatre Company in Brisbane, and whilst beginning his film roles as early as 1981, it took fifteen years for the critics to sit up and take notice. In 1996, he stunned audiences with his brilliant and realistic portrayal of the genius pianist David Helfgott in Scott Hicks' "Shine". For this remarkable performance, he won an Oscar for Best Actor as well as amassing a BAFTA award, a Golden Globe award and many others from Film Critic Circles worldwide. He has since worked in a wide range of dramatic roles, yet he does not appear to take himself too seriously. He is equally capable of humour, as evinced in the film Mystery Men (1999), and the Pirates of the Caribbean series (2003, 2006, 2007). Rush has been nominated twice more in recent years for Best Actor Oscars and will no doubt be nominated - and win! - yet again in the future.
