L'anglaise et le duc

The tale of a beautiful royalist English gentlewoman, Grace Elliott (Lucy Russell), living perilously in France during the Revolution, and her doomed relationship with Philippe, Duke of Orleans, (Jean-Claude Dreyfus). Although a cousin of King Louis XVI, the Duke is nonetheless a supporter of revolutionary ideas. The Lady manages to persuade the Duke to risk his life to rescue an outlaw, with tragic results but fails to keep him from voting for the King's execution.

The Lady and the Duke review by Charlotte

Interesting Perspective

This movie gave an interesting insiders/outsiders view of the French Revolution as seen through the eyes of a British woman with royal French connections. Since she was as a royalist and the Duke was not it is able to show the two sides of the struggle while at the same time provides a unique insight into how over time the Revolution turned against the man that was it's strongest asset in the beginning. An excellent, and human, overview of this historical event.

The Lady and the Duke review by Tim from London

Good film from an old master

This film tells an interesting and thoughtful (and true) story of a Scottish lady loyal to the royalists during the French revolution. Not just a costume drama but also a fasticinating insight into French politics during this time and a suspenceful storyline. Great characterisations and good use of digital technology which made paintings come to life - surprisingly so for an Eric Rohmer film which are normally naturalistic and lacking in special effects. Well worth watching.
