Synopsis:
Without discrediting his earlier output, the 1980s proved to be a musical awakening for Tom Waits; there was an undeniable shift in the composition of his songs amidst both the burgeoning influences of the newly found experimental sounds he had discovered, and within the writing partnership he formed with new wife, the screenwriter Katherine Brennan. Brennan introduced Waits to a wealth of material with which he had previously not been familiar - including virtually the entire catalogue of Captain Beefheart - which spurred in Tom the pioneering musical spirit he has continued to display in his work ever since, and which even today defines his every new record.
With an unrivalled mixture of performance and studio footage, seldom heard interviews and rare photographs, 'Tom Waits: Second Hand Stories' is the definitive overview of this maverick performer's career since 1983 and the release of the magnificent Swordfishtrombones, up to present times. With review, comment and criticism coming from a highly respected and knowledgeable panel, including the legendary Waits' producer Bones Howe, as well as biographers Barney Hoskyns and Patrick Humphries, this documentary film is the finest available on the second half of Waits' long and extraordinary journey and provides a fascinating insight into the man and his music.
