James Mason

James Neville Mason was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire on 15 May 1909. After leaving Cambridge, he discarded his intended architectural career to act, and quickly joined with the well know repertory company the Old Vic. He became a noted stage actor, and was soon receiving roles in British-made films. Mason's forte for playing callous and lachrymose character roles ensured his standing as one of the dominant 1940's British film stars. Within a few years, Mason had crossed the Atlantic, where he was offered markedly more charismatic and noble roles than he had hitherto played. During the prolific career that followed, he continued to project an electric quality onscreen. His indiscriminate choices of parts at times led to undeserving titles being linked with his name, yet all through his career he was admired and revered both within and without the film industry. Notorious for his smooth and sonorous voice and impeccable portrayal of seething emotions beneath a deadpan exterior, James Mason is always watchable, a bewitching and captivating actor. He died in Lausanne, Switzerland of a heart attack at the age of 74.
