Set in Toronto at the dawn of the 20th century, Murdoch Mysteries explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson), a methodical and dashing detective who pioneers innovative forensic techniques to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders. Murdoch's wider team include Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig), Murdoch's skeptical yet reluctantly supportive boss; feisty coroner Dr. Emily Grace, (Georgina Reilly); and pathologist-turned-psychiatrist Dr. Julia Ogden (Helene Joy) who is a staunch supporter and shares the detective's fascination with forensic science and innovative ideas. On the first-ever Victoria Day, Murdoch is reunited with his beloved Julia aboard an opulent passenger ship on its maiden voyage. Their love deepens over the course of the season, but does not escape complication as the murder of Julia's former husband, Darcy Garland, continues to cast a shadow. Crabtree and Dr. Grace's blossoming relationship faces its own issues as they struggle against their apparent class differences.
